The fire broke out around 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, at a two-story home on Candice Drive in Port Deposit, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The blaze started on the rear porch due to an electrical failure.
Before firefighters arrived, a neighbor spotted the flames and immediately jumped into action.
Using a garden hose, officials said he managed to contain the fire long enough to stop it from spreading, preventing what could have been tens of thousands of dollars in additional damage.
When firefighters from the Water Witch Volunteer Fire Company arrived, they found the fire mostly knocked down but still stretched a hose line to soak the area and checked for any fire extension inside the home.
The damage was limited to the exterior, and no injuries were reported.
The home’s smoke alarm had activated, but no sprinkler system was present, officials said. The total damage estimate was $20,000—$10,000 to the home and $10,000 to the contents.
Investigators praised the quick-thinking neighbor, crediting his fast response with stopping the fire from spreading further.
